Taxes Lesson 1: An Introduction

The slides will advance themselves on a timer, but you can use the controls at the bottom to pause, skip ahead, or repeat something. Make sure to turn up your volume to hear Leslie G. Woods discuss the progressivity of our tax code and the way taxes relate to inequality and injustice.

“We have seen a pattern of cutting taxes, reducing what we are able to invest in people, and a growth of inequality.”

In this lesson, you will learn the difference between flat, regressive, and progressive taxes, as well as the way different types of taxes impact the degree of income inequality. You will hear from Leslie G. Woods (Domestic Poverty Representative, Presbyterian Church USA), look at the history of the U.S. tax system over time, and examine the way our decisions around tax policy influence the health of the economy, the rate of inflation, and the extent of inequality.
