Bayou Interfaith Shared Community Organizing

The Bayou Region of coastal Louisiana has experienced more than its fair share of disasters and disastrous events in the last century, but especially in the last six years. Our coastal communities have faced impacts from significant land loss and erosion, subsidence, salt-water intrusion, hypoxia, air and water pollution, hurricanes and storm surges, and oil drilling disasters. And of course, the effects of these events are stronger in this region because of the lack of effective “voice” of the people who are most impacted by them.

On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon explosion in the Gulf Coast caused 4.9 million barrels of crude oil to spill into the Coastal waters from Texas through Florida. BP’s oil continued to hemorrhage into the ocean for the subsequent 87 days.

Facts about the Gulf Coast

The Gulf Oil Spill began on April 20 as the result of the Deepwater Horizon rig explosion. Oil has been gushing out at alarming rates since then, becoming the largest offshore spill in U.S. history and one of the most devastating disasters along the Gulf Coast. Communities along the gulf that were still in the process of recovering from hurricanes Katrina and Rita were dealt another devastating blow.
